Jolomo - John Lowrie Morrison OBE
Visions of the Western Isles
21 - 27 November 2011

the Sage Gateshead

John Lowrie Morrison OBE, the great contemporary Scottish artist better known as Jolomo,  will exhibit 65 paintings in his first solo exhibition at The Sage Gateshead from 21 - 27 November.  Entitled “Visions of the Western Isles” these works draw inspiration from the rugged coastline of the West coast of Scotland a place where Jolomo lives and works and never tires of painting continually finding inspiration in his  surroundings.

This exhibition will feature his vividly expressionist land and dramatic seascapes of Staffa, Iona, Mull, North and South Uist, Islay and several other Scottish islands.  There are paintings of the the moon rising  on Bosta Beach, Isle of Lewis and Tobermory,  the evening gloaming on Lewis and Easdale Island, dramatic seascapes of  Laggan Bay, Islay and Isle of Coll and other paintings  feature the vivid reds, sunny yellows and dazzling whites of crofts in the landscape.

What sets John Lowie Morrison from other artists is his ability to see colour and to transfer this on to his canvases. His works hang in homes around the world including HM The Queen, Sting, Madonna, but also in the houses of ordinary people some of whom have never bought paintings before and that means a lot to the artist. Jolomo has a long-standing link with the North East of England, having exhibited with Corrymella Scott Gallery since 1998. In 2001 they went to Hong Kong, and his first show at The Air Gallery, London in 2002 drew collectors from all over the world and it has now become an annual feature of the London gallery scene.

A percentage of the sales from this exhibition will be donated by Jolomo to the Maggie’s Centre North East, a cancer care centre to be built at The Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Morrison is delighted to be back in this region “I love the North East of England, having spent some time on family holidays at Alnmouth on the Northumberland coast and I am delighted to support the Maggie’s Centre North East, it will be an inspirational place and I am pleased to see that art therapy is high on their agenda for patient support.
